understanding Autism (lil' version)

Every one deserves a friend. Everyone deserves a chance to befriend a child with autism.

Children with autism have a different way learning, speaking and acting than kids without autism. It is like their brains are sick or they don’t work properly. With our help and a lot of hard work we can get them to work a lot better. They have a hard time talking, sharing, sitting still, and playing with toys in the “right” way.

It may appear to some kids that children with autism are “not sharing” or “being annoying” or “acting too young for their age” or “not playing right”. But these children cannot help it; they are not acting like this on purpose. We need to be tolerant of kids that are different and maybe even try to help. Just because a child is different does not mean he/she is not going to be a fun friend.

If you give them a chance you will be surprised to find how much you will learn from them!
Many of these kids will not get to drive a car, will not go to college, will not get to leave their parents house, will not get a job, and will not be on your sports teams. Can you imagine that?
Children with autism have lots of fun in other ways. They are happy with many other things, like their collections, running, and playing. Get to know a child with autism and ask to see their beautiful collections. Just don’t try to touch them as that may upset them.

I hope you will befriend a child with autism and write to me at mystory@lilolme.com and tell me about your new friend.
